Captain’s Blog June 30, 2011 (Day 55) Evergreen Aviation & Space Museum, Spruce Goose.

We try to plan our events based on the weather but sometimes it is difficult because the forecasts out here change minute by minute. Our original plan was to do coastal events but then we decided to take the 72-mile trip inland to the Evergreen Aviation and Space Museum to check out the Spruce Goose.

Ron was deciding our route and opted for the longer route with better roads. Whoa, did I say better. The roads were paved but really winding and narrow. Despite that the trucks flew down the road like jet planes. They even got Ron’s attention.

Because of the winding back roads it took almost two hours to get to the museum. We arrived at 1:15 pm and were lucky enough to latch on to a tour at that time – or so we thought. The tour guide was an aviation expert and worked in the field for over 40 years but he talked so much and presented so much information that I had to walk away a couple of times because my eyes were glazing over. Ronnie was enthralled but after two hours I had to pull him away or we wouldn’t get through the rest of the museum.image

After breaking away from the tour (it went on for another hour) we headed to the Spruce Goose (or the Flying Boat) built by millionaire Howard Hughes. The Spruce Goose was moved to it’s current location in 1998, reassembled and put on display at the museum in 2002.

Ronnie has always wanted to see the Spruce Goose and was happy to get the opportunity. Unfortunately it did not stand alone and was surrounded by so many other planes it was difficult to get the full perspective of its size. Magnificently large!!!!

The plane was huge and as impressive as we thought it would be.

We finished our tour in the Aviation Museum and took in the Space Museum. It was also very impressive. With rocket launchers, a mock -up of lunar equipment and a replica of a Russian Space Capsule made for an interesting tour.

Behind the museum there were several tanks and a stray cat. A woman was so concerned for the cat she sent her husband to get cat food.

After leaving the museum we headed back to the CG. The ride back didn’t seem as long but still was almost two hours. We ate dinner and headed out to the beach again. Ronnie took more National Geographic  pictures of another beautiful sunset. He gets such great pictures on our little camera.

Ron’s always talking about getting a big fancy camera but I think the great pictures are from his picture taking ability and knowing how to get a great shot. Good job Ron!!!!

Friday starts the beginning of the July 4th weekend and we have no reservations. Not sure where the next stop will be. I guess it depends on where we can find  a campsite. My eternally optimistic husband believes we will have no problem. We shall see.
