Captain’s Blog July 5, 2011 (Day 60) Lakeshore RV Park, Florence, Oregon, Heceta Head Lighthouse, Sea Lion Caves

Before leaving our resort site Ron took Jewel for her walk on the beach. She loves the beach and will walk until she drops.  We were always amazed at the landscape and the fact that they have so many landslides. We learned that the rock surface is very unstable and what you think is solid rock really isn’t.

When we first got Jewel she didn’t know how to climb stairs – now she is a master at it!   r0n NOTE: and Deb

So far we have been successful at either viewing or touring the Oregon coast lighthouses. On the way to our CG we passed both the lighthouse and Sea Lion Caves so had to double back later that day.

The sun was shining brightly and the temp a balmy 58 but the wind was blowing so hard you could barely stand up. Whenever we opened the car door it was pulled from our grasp and took us with it.

65 mph gusts

We toured the Heceta Head Lighthouse with a very knowledgeable volunteer. The lighthouse is scheduled to close on July 31, 2011 for a massive renovation that is expected to tkle over two years at a cost of over $100,000.

The lighthouse stairwell is vey fragile so only four people at a time can climb it.

The outside is crumbling and the outside walkway is off limits but the views are great.image

Next we went to the Sea Lion Caves reported to be America’s  largest sea cave. The formation of the sea cave began over 25 million years ago and the interior of the cave is an incredible 12 stories high and stretches the full length of a football field.

The notice outside the elevator before going into the ground 210 feet was not encouraging. Very pretty sign though. LOL

Sea Lions in the Cave – hard to see in the picture – Very stinky place – Ugh!!!

Hold your Nose!!!!

Where the rocks come together at the top of the cave is a fault line. Gives one a warm and fuzzy feeling. The wind was blowing so hard outside and blowing with enough force down the elevator shaft that the elevator wouldn’t go to the surface. YIKES – HELP – WHERE ARE THOSE STAIRS????

Finally someone came and got the elevator working again. Once on top we had our picture taken by some people from Canada. Notice the lovely hair blowing in the wind. The man taking the picture was actually blown off the step – and he was  big guy!!!!

We decided to eat out – haven’t done that in two weeks so stopped at a Diner in town. Ron loves diners and this one was cool  and the food really good. r0n NOTE: and of course I got Meatloaf!

After a great dinner we headed back to the CG. Not quite like the one we left but functional.

We will continue down the coast catching the remainder of the lighthouses and taking in more spectacular views.
