Captain’s Blog July 8, 2011 (Day 62) Gold Bear CG, Klamath ,CA

We took our last ride down the Oregon coast with more spectacular vistas. We were unaware that our reverie was about to end.

Once we arrived at the California border we received an unexpected surprise. We were directed into a huge garage with a Dept. of Agriculture inspector waiting for us. WHAT is going on?? She first welcomed us to California then proceeded to tell us that since we originated in Massachusetts we were subject to inspection for Gypsy Moth Larvae. OK, then. Next we were told to pull up and shut off the engine. She got on a dolly, rolled under the rig and inspected the rig for larvae. Once done with that she wanted to know what fruits and vegetables  we were carrying and the type of dog. She was satisfied that we were not bringing a blight into her state  gave us a certificate of inspection (Good for one Year) and sent us on our way. Welcome to California – the land of many rules and regulations.

Once on the highway we were shocked to find that the speed limit was 70 MPH but because we were towing we could not drive above 55 MPH. Certainly slowed us down – a lot. It doesn’t seem like a very bright idea and perhaps may even be a hazard. But when in Rome – so we crawled down the highway at 55 no more no less.

We opted to stay at a Passport America CG (we’re members) and secured a lake front site  with full hook-ups for $15.00 per night. What a deal and a great site. The CG manager was a riot and when we asked him about the inspection we had gone through he laughed and said that Californian's are all paranoid, LOL

We wanted to check out the Redwoods National Park but couldn’t seem to get a handle on its location. So, we took a ride down the road to try to ascertain its’ location. We stopped at a visitor center at Prairie Creek. We spoke to very feisty elderly lady (from Cambridge, MA – of course) who told us that the Redwood National and State Parks are combined because there is nothing to see in the National Park. The reason- the majority of the Redwoods have been logged. What???? The government allowed that to happen!!!!

She did tell us that there were redwoods' to see at Prairie Creek so we took a short hike and took in the majesty of the trees.

On the ride back to the CG we took the Newton B, Drury Scenic Parkway with more giant redwoods. It was definitely a lovely drive and one not to miss.

Back at the CG we were surprised to see that there was a bear lounging across the river. A very large black bear. We could see him well through the binoculars but he was too far away to get a good picture.

We plan to take in the Trees of Mystery and a jet boat tour on the river before we leave Golden Bear. Despite the California welcome we are enjoying the sun and nice weather without the wind – finally!!
