Since we had spent so much time in the Tillamook area we decided it was time to head South. Our plan was to try to get a site at the Beverly Beach Sate Park CG in Newport.
I wanted to stop at the Yaquina lighthouses in Newport with the goal of seeing or climbing all the lighthouses on the Oregon coast. We were planning on stopping at Beverly Beach but saw a spot on the side of the road that looked like a scenic overlook. OOOPHS!!!! Although a wide spot in the road it was not a scenic overlook and the road leading out had a sign stating not a road for RV’s or buses. AND – the kicker !!!!! No ability to turn around while towing. Ron tried and it was jus too narrow so we disconnected and made the best of it.
Since we were disconnected and we wanted to see the lighthouses 5 miles away we headed into town. On the way we stopped at the state CG but no luck – it was full. We did see a Wal Mart, so if no CG’s were available we would spend the night there.
Our first stop was the Yaquina Head lighthouse where we waited for 40 minutes to climb to the light only to find out we couldn’t go out onto the deck because the Coast Guard would not allow it.
We were amazed to see all the birds nesting on the rocks in the ocean. There were at least four different species of birds all chirping at the same time and making a whole lot of noise. They were just far enough away making it difficult to get a good picture even with the zoom lens.
Next we stopped at the Yaquina Bay Lighthouse. That lighthouse is no longer used to guide ships and became defunct when the Yauquina Head lighthouse was built.
We walked down to the tidal pools but the tide was coming in so were unable to see the sea life in the filled pools. We did get to see seals out on the rocks. We watched as a baby seal aggravated its mother and she swatted him. That baby seal screamed like a human baby. We were amazed at how all babies know just what to do to get their mothers attention.
It was around 5 PM when we headed back to the MH. My job was to look for a CG that just might have a vacancy. On the way in I had noticed a pretty nice place overlooking the ocean that looked like it might have two sites available. It looked fairly fancy so I wasn’t sure if it was a private resort. We decided to stop in anyway and ask. Sure enough it was very private and the sites are exclusively owned. Luck would have it that the developer was there and he and Ronnie had a chat. Scott, the developer, asked what we were driving for a MH – no junk MH’s in that place. Then he said we could stay there if we wanted and I held my breathe as while he decided what he would charge us. (This was definitely a $100 per night place or more). Surprisingly he quoted $65.00 and since it was July 3rd and we really didn’t want to stay at Wal Mart (way too early) and the views were magnificent we took it.
We went to pick up our MH and I followed Ron back to the Pacific Surf Motorhome Estates. There were three other MH’s and a Fifth Wheel in the gated estate. Three owners and a CG Host. Not too sure if the owners were happy about having a non-owner in their private estate but since the developer was there they seemed OK with it.
Later we found out the sites were $89,000 for a 6 week rotation. YIKES, that’s a lot of money for a camp site even if it is overlooking the ocean on the cold Oregon Coastline.

We were extremely happy to have been able to get such a beautiful site overlooking the ocean and the Yaquina Head Lighthouse. Later that evening we walked the beach for over an hour. The hike down to the beach was tricky with some very steep steps but it was worth it.
Back at our site we waited for the sun to set .
Every day we are thankful for what we have and things we are able to do. Enjoying sunsets, seeing this great country and being together is a real blessing. Not sure if we will stay another night but since it will be July 4th we may stay to avoid the traffic.
