Captain’s Blog July 9, 2011 (Day 64) Trees of Mystery, Jet Boat Tour, Sunset

We woke to another sunny, bright day and the big black bear sunning across the river. Early in the day we took in the Trees of Mystery and Sky Trail. We had done tour there 25 years ago but didn’t remember too much except for the giant Paul Bunyan our front.

We walked the trail and admired the many giant redwood trees.

We decided that we did remember a lot about the place once we were inside.image Although it didn’t seem as impressive as it was the first time we visited.

We took the ride on the  Sky Trail. It was fun and the views great.

Later we took a Jet Boat tour on the Klamath River. The tour lasted for two hours and we were fortunate to see a variety of wildlife in their natural habitant.

The one year old  black bear is a twin who lost its’  Mother shortly after birth. The Captain of the boat brought out 10 pounds of apples every day and spread them out along the river’s edge making sure the bears didn't see that a human was bringing food. Both bears survived and are thriving now. This bear stands on its hind legs when he hears the boat approach.

We saw ducks  and ducklings, an otter family, bald eagles to name a few but the best was the whales in the river. Yes, I said whales. A mother gray whale and her baby have been in the Klamath River for about one month. Not sure what they are doing in the river but they are there. We did get some pictures although they didn't really show much of their bodies above the surface.

The top of the whale – looks like a log but it is a whale. The baby would stick its head out of the water but we weren’t able to get a picture.

In 1964 there was an enormous flood that wiped out the entire area. Below are pictures of the remnants of the bridge that went into the town of Klamath.

It was a great boat ride and the spins that we experienced were great fun. The best part was being able to see so much wild life. More then we ever saw in Alaska.

Later that night we took a ride to the Klamath River Outlook. To get to the outlook we had to drive past a landslide still blocking one side of the road. There are lots of landslides around here!  We love to watch the sunset so we wanted to catch one at the overlook.

These pictures  speak for themselves.

We headed back to the CG and spent the evening enjoying the quiet and serenity we love some much.
