Captain’s Blog July 23, 2011 (Day 78) Ventura Harbor, Silver Strand Beach, Hollywood Beach, Tony’s Pizzeria

It was another beautiful day so we drove to Ventura Beach Harbor to check out the homes along Silver Strand and Hollywood Beach.

The area is quite beautiful with gorgeous homes everywhere.image

We were quite impressed with the homes that were never ending. It’s amazing that so many people are so wealthy. We run into these types of neighborhoods all over the country.

While walking along the shore we met some interesting people. In particular was a couple in a small electric car. As it turned out they are both in the movie industry. She has done many commercials for Colgate toothpaste, and Pepsi Cola. He produces videos and did  one for the LNG protests in Fall River recently. They were both very friendly and told us a lot about the area. Including the fact that their home has both a front and back yard and they don’t have to  barbecue in the garage like the people on Hollywood beach and Silver Strand. Well, well, we thought they wouldn’t think much of our non-waterfront homes.  LOL.

He told us about a pizza place we should try out and was very sure that it was the best pizza around. Interestingly enough he was born and raised in Springfield , MA and she came from New Jersey. It seems no matter where we are we can find a New England connection.

There were many sail boats out enjoying the weather. This was one of the white sand beaches we enjoyed.

There are a lot of enterprising people here in California. I know everyone knows about hotels and motels but here they also have Boatels. Yes,  they have Bed & Breakfast Boatels.

We stopped at the Channel Island National Park’s visitor center. The Channel Islands are a group islands that are protected by the National Park Service. The only way to the islands is by boat or private plane. The islands are the home to very specific types of plants and animals unique to only those islands. The islands are really beautiful but getting to them is  a little tricky. There are boats that run to the individual islands but none that tour around all the islands. Only one of the islands allows overnight tent camping. It is definitely a return to for us. We would love to take the time to visit all the islands and explore.

Later we decided to check out the pizza place that had been recommended to us. We were told that Tony’s Pizzeria looked like a small hut and could be easily  missed so we were on the lookout for it. We did locate it and it definitely was  hut like. It was kind of run down and I wasn’t sure if I really wanted to eat there. The California Pizza Kitchen looked a lot better to me.

There were only two chairs and a small bar to sit at inside so no room for the three of us or anyone else. The interior left a little to be desired but we were told the place has been there for 90 years with the same pizza ovens and the pizza was great.

The proverbial “Hole in the Wall”

Since there was no room for us inside we opted to eat at the picnic benches outside. Ron cleaned the pigeon poop off the one table then we decided we needed some sun so moved to another. Since there were lots of pigeons – once again Ron cleaned off the picnic bench.

Not sure if we were brave or stupid to stay there - but we did. The exterior décor was as sad as the interior.

Some interesting bench seating.

As we waited for our pizza the wind picked up and the temp dropped dramatically. The little bit of sun we had disappeared and we were freezing. So much for sunny, warm Southern California.

Despite all of the little things that would make one  question their sanity and  decision to eat at  Tony’s establishment,  the pizza, even though served on a piece of cardboard was quite good. Yes indeed, I did say served on a piece of cardboard. No trays or boxes here. Tony evidently does not believe in wasting money on the finer things in life.

As everyone can see we only dine at the finest establishments. LOL Not so sure that Nancy agreed but she was sure a good sport about it.  It didn’t look like it in this picture but we did have lots of laughs. Surprisingly the place was quite busy with non-stop customers so I guess we weren’t the only crazy people there.

We were told that a lot of the movie stars that live in the area eat there  - like John Travolta. Hmmmm – not so sure if some of the info we received was fact or fiction.

We had a very fun day, enjoyed our pizza  and headed home for the evening. There is never a dull moment with the crazy Tremblay’s.

Follow Up On Tony’s Pizzeria:

We told Nancy’s friend Nancy and her son Travis about the place so they went over to check it out. They were not so impressed with the pizza and contributed some of the above pictures.

We don’t remember our pizza being greasy – or maybe we just like greasy pizza!! How about you cousin Nancy – was the pizza greasy?????
