Ron had a bad day yesterday and an even worse night. He was so tired that he couldn’t think straight. In retrospect we should NOT have driven straight here without stopping. This was so out of character for us. Traveling non-stop did not make for a pleasant experience. Even jewel and I are drained and happy to be in a stationary MH.
Today we relaxed and spent a lot of time planning our time here. We drove over to the Cheyenne Mountain CG and fell in love with the place. We were unable to book a camp site there for the weekend but are booked for the rest of next week.
The KOA we are staying at leaves a lot to be desired. It is more like a huge dirt parking lot that borders the highway. Can’t really complain since we got one night free and we have full hook-ups including WiFi. And we did have a great view of the snow-capped Pike’s Peak. You could see it from our camp site in the background.
We planned on going to dinner at a place called Baradelli’s Barbecue but unfortunately when we got there it was gone. Really gone – only a dirt lot remains of what was suppose to be a great restaurant. Go figure.
Instead we ate at Applebee’s and had a great waitress that gave us tips on what to do and what to see. She convinced us that we should drive up to Pike’s Peak instead of taking the Cog Railway. She told us we would miss some great scenery on the train but be prepared to be scared looking over the side of the road with no guard rails and sheer drops.
It is going to be in the 30’s with snow showers on Pike’s Peak tomorrow so we are holding off on that drive until Tuesday when the weather is suppose to be clear and be much warmer.
Tomorrow we plan to take in the Miramont Castle Museum, the Manitou Springs Fire Department Exhibit, The Garden of the Gods Nature Center and hopefully if time allows the Cave of the Winds. No trip would be complete without a cave tour.
Taking a day to rest has made us both feel human again and we are now looking forward to our adventures.
