Captain’s Blog June 15 & 16 2011 (Day 40 & 41) Bowling and Locks Cruise

Today we decided to take in some Ten-pin bowling. I haven't bowled  Ten -pin in many years and was looking forward to it. Kelly and I bowled on the Morton Hospital League back in the 70’s.

Megan has a killer arm and readily hits strikes and spares as did Kelly. We took great video of both of them hitting strikes. Unfortunately the great video and pictures we had were deleted by mistake by Ron.

They are both great bowlers. It took Ron some time but he finally got into the groove hitting his share of strikes and spares.

I, on the other hand couldn’t get the ball to stay out of the gutter. To my surprise I couldn’t throw the ball the normal way. Instead of under hand throwing  down the alley I’d twist my wrist and throw weird. My scores were in the toilet and I was frustrated. After some thought and dropping the ball a couple of times it dawned on me that my right hand and wrist are extremely weak. Why oh why???  I finally realized that my right hand and wrist have never been the same since I broke it a couple of years ago. So much for Ten-pin. I guess I have to stick with duck-pin. Despite my scores of 34 and 45 we had a blast.

On Thursday we took a ride into Seattle to take a2 1/2 hour  Argosy Locks Cruise. The cruise connects the salt water of Puget Sound and the fresh water of Lake Union via the Hiram Chittenden Locks.  The tour takes you along the historic waterfront, one of the world’s largest shipping terminals and the “Sleepless in Seattle” houseboat community.

Before taking the cruise we stopped at Joey’s on Lake Union and had a great lunch. (This is where Ron deleted the bowling pictures) image

We were a little early for the cruise so we sat on the pier and stopped to watch some people carving a huge totem pole for the John T. Williams Memorial.

image Mr. Williams was a homeless American Indian, well known in Seattle for his Totem carvings. He was walking across the street in down town Seattle with a block of wood and his carving knife when a Police Officer spotted him, viewed him as a threat and yelled for him to drop his knife. Four seconds later (all caught on video tape) Mr. Williams was shot dead. The city of Seattle was outraged  when the officer was found innocent of any wrong doing. Mr. Williams brother and other wood carvers are completing the Memorial Totem Pole to mark the anniversary  of his death in March. The Seattle Police Department is now under investigation by the Federal Government because of  recent multiple shootings resulting in deaths by the Settle police.

In order to get to the boat we were bussed to another ship terminal. Seattle is in the middle of huge infra-structure renovations and is an absolute nightmare to get around. The bus driver was getting frustrated but did manage to get through all the traffic without incident.

Megan thought we were going to make the plunge into the ocean just like a Disney ride. LOL.

Not a Disney Ride! LOL

imageThese boats are a lot smaller then we expected. A little too small to battle the Bering Sea.

It was a great day for a water adventure and the sun even made an appearance for  a few minutes. Later we went to Longhorn’s for the best barbecue we have ever had. If the weather is good tomorrow we will be taking a hike to Franklin Falls.
