Captain’s Blog May 11, 2011 (Day 5) Colby, Kansas

Woke this morning to another hot, muggy day but after a good nights sleep we were ready to roll again.

We crossed into Kansas this morning and we are now in Dorothy and ToTo land. Hopefully we won’t be transported to the land of OZ like she was!!!

We have traveled across the country before and thought the ride through Nebraska was long and tedious but nothing can match driving through Kansas. Over  400 miles of nothing but flat land and corn fields unless you want to throw in the 40 MPH crosswinds that sometimes required a fight at the wheel to keep the MH on the road.

As we traveled along I-70 we were amazed at the sheer nothingness  all around us.

Ron was bored and commented that driving this road could make one let loose with a primal scream.

Since we were spending so much time driving through Kansas I could not help but notice the dark skies that were building around us. Scary looking black clouds – ones that just might drop a tornado on us. Soooo, I picked up  my trusty Cobra CB and turned to the weather channel. Sure enough, severe weather predicted that could possibly drop quarter size hail, 60 mph winds and a tornado watch until 1 AM. Great, just what I needed to hear.

Picture a funnel dropping out of these clouds!!!!

We arrived at  the Colby, Kansas Pilot Truck Plaza around 7 PM. Ron’s goal today was 400 miles but we missed it by three miles. Interestingly, the temperature has dropped to  45 degrees and the wind continues to howl.

We will spend the night and hopefully not be blown onto the Yellow Brick Road.IMG_9663
