We hit the road by 10 AM. I was not feeling too well, tired and achy but OK. The drive to Monument Valley was around 225 miles. The plan was to do the 17 mile Monument Valley Loop then find a CG for the night.
The drive was long, flat and fairly unattractive, but the roads were good. We stopped along the way and had lunch. While parked along a small strip mall we encountered a stray dog. It was kind of skinny but pretty. It looked hungry so I brought out some dog food. It ate the first plate up in a big hurry so I gave it a little more. Poor doggy! I don’t think it had a good meal in a long time.
We arrived at Monument Valley around 2 PM. It was getting hot and uncomfortable but since we were in an air-conditioned car driving the 17 mile loop would be OK. The place was a mob scene and with the MH and tow vehicle we had to drive around for a while before finding a parking space. The RV spaces were occupied by cars causing a real shortage of spaces for the larger MH’s.
The 17 mile drive was on fairly rough road and it was recommended not to do the drive without a four-wheel drive and high clearance vehicle. We were OK but lots of people in regular cars were grinding their bottoms.
Monument Valley was quiet different and beautiful in an odd sort of way. We left around 5 pm on a quest for a CG. There was a CG across the street but we decided we should head down the road and get a site at the next CG available.
Well, the next three towns either lacked camping facilities or didn’t have facilities big enough to accommodate a 37 foot MH. Soooo, we were out of luck. Ron thought Mexican Hat – so named after the rock that looks like a Mexican Hat might be our best bet.
Nope, No CG in Mexican Hat either!!!!!! Just a Mexican Rock Hat!!!
By the time we got into the town of Teec Nos Pos it was very late and Ronnie was tired of driving. I still didn’t feel well and there was another 85 mile drive to Mesa Verde. So since there were no C’s for as far as the eye could see we decided to spend the night at the Teec Nos Pos Trading Post.
Our Camp site for the night. It was very hot and there was barely a breeze blowing.
We were parked near a farm and when we opened the screen door a load of flies joined us. Yuk, hot, sweaty and now FLIES!!! Ron pulled out the fly swatter and proceeded to kill the flies. Jewel is not happy when we are killing flies or making any noise that sounds like hit so she was off and running.
We had dinner and settled in hoping it would cool down so we could sleep. Mesa Verde is our next planned stop and because the elevation is greater then 8000 feet we hoped for cooler temps.
