Captain’s Blog August 5, 2011 (Day 90) Repair Day

Surprisingly we had gotten a fairly decent night’s sleep. Although we didn’t have any AC the fan in the bedroom worked well and the temperature co-operated and dropped to 69 degrees.

It was hard to believe we had been out on the road for  90 days. It went both slow at times and very fast at other times.  We were in the slow mode wondering if we could get serviced out in the middle of nowhere.

Ron called the  Main Street RV & Marine Repair Shop around 8:15 AM explained the problem and what he thought was needed to fix it. They said they had a transfer switch (wow that was a miracle) and would send someone to the CG to replace it.  We could have brought the MH to the shop but opted to pay the service charge for the convenience.

About two hours later a young man named Dustin showed up with an automatic transfer switch in hand. He looked around  twelve years old but was the owner of the company and seemed very knowledgeable. After some time he informed us that the transfer switch was not the right one and he couldn’t get it to fit.

He left stating that he would get one “in-town” – wherever “in-town” was and would be back. We figured we wouldn’t be going anywhere so ditched our plans to re-hike the Slot Canyon Loop.

Two hours later Dustin was back – but with no transfer switch. OH, OH – now what. As it turns out an automatic  transfer switch is a luxury – not a necessity. Dustin proceed to rewire the system so Ron would have to manually plug into the generator once off shore power. No biggy and it worked fine. We were back in business.

Dustin was honest and did not take us over the hurdles. In the end it was a $300.00 repair that was worth ten times that to us. We were relieved that we could get service so quickly and done expertly.

The plan was to try to get in another hike after the repair but instead we prepared for departure on Saturday
